In the lush hills and valleys of Southern Cameroons, known to its people as Ambazonia, an unrelenting struggle for freedom continues. For decades, the people of this region have sought the right to govern themselves, to live in peace as an independent nation, and to prosper free from political marginalization.
The crisis began in 2016 with protests over perceived cultural and political discrimination and assimilation, but tensions between the Anglophone Southern Cameroons and the Francophone-led Cameroonian government reach back much further. What began as peaceful demands for equal treatment escalated into violence, displacing hundreds of thousands and leaving communities fractured.
Yet, amid the turmoil, the spirit of the Ambazonian people remains unbroken. Their resilience is deeply rooted in their faith. Across villages, towns, and refugee camps, the sound of hymns still rises on Sunday mornings. Families gather in small churches and under open skies to pray for deliverance, believing that God has not forgotten them.
“We hold on to hope because our faith tells us that suffering does not last forever. Our people believe in the promise of freedom, just as we believe in God’s promise of peace,” said Dr. Emmanuel Tita, President of the Friends of Ambazonia, Incorporated-a nonprofit advocacy organization headquartered in the United States.
For many, Christianity has been both a refuge and a rallying force. The message of perseverance in the face of hardship, forgiveness despite injustice, and the vision of a better tomorrow sustains those who have lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones.
The dream of Ambazonia is not merely political; it is deeply human. It is the desire to raise children without fear, to cultivate land without harassment, and to build businesses that can thrive. It is the hope of creating a society where prosperity and peace are not privileges but rights.
While international attention ebbs and flows, the people of Southern Cameroons continue to look ahead. Their prayers are not just for survival, but for a day when they will be able to live in freedom, shaping their own destiny.
Ambazonian mothers desire a future of protection and prosperity for their children, and trust in God to help restore peace.
Amidst the ongoing war, human rights abuses, illegal arrests and massive displacement in the Former British Southern Cameroons, Ambazonians gathered at home and in the diaspora on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to celebrate Ambazonia’s Independence Day from the United Kingdom in 1961. Friends of Ambazonia Inc. celebrated in Tampa, Florida.
The struggle of Ambazonia to be an independent nation is far from over, but it is sustained by a belief stronger than fear—the conviction that freedom, justice, and peace, though long delayed, will one day come.
